remnants of a mechanistic world

Remnants of a Mechanistic World - Chris Lawrence 2004
.mechanistic world.

true stability results when
presumed order and
presumed disorder are balanced

a truly stable system
expects the unexpected,
is prepared to be disrupted,
waits to be transformed

- Tom Robbins

NOTE: This is still being constructed - a long term project so occassionally stay tuned. Eventually, I hope this will result in a multisensory experience and possibly an exhibit. Turn your sound on (hopefully it works or will be working soon)! * the sound was recorded from the same clock mechanism in the artwork 'mechanistic world'

are we on the long road of a huge paradigm shift, one lasting decades?

a mechanistic philosophy, in full force during the industrial revolution, still looms dominant

the overarching world view that has prevailed in our society, that we have functioned within for a long time remains strong although much of what was good has been lost

the lost 'art'

these thoughts occured to me during a journey through my father's world of watchmaking - the remnants of his craft, his art, left behind - old watches, amongst his collection of wonders, that still work after almost a century

watchmaking is nearly a lost art now, traded in for the digital age, but a rolex will never share the same kind of beauty inherent in it's mechanical predecessors nor the longevity inherent in both the craftsmanship and design

watchmaking remnants

'remnant'...a part of something that is left from a larger original whole

wishful thinking - that remnants, the good ones, of a mechanistic world have remained while the larger whole has changed

i think it is just the opposite, our world is turned inside out
