About this
work...
This work is autobiographical, one self-portrait. The poem coincides
with one of my childhood spring rituals. Living through the cold
Midwest winters, I would take the first opportunity of Spring to go to
the levee and feel the freedom in the open expanses, the freedom of the
warmth minus all the coats and other clothing, and the freedom of the
solitude. There I would sit in the sun, in my solitude, facing toward
the river to the south in a yearly ritual of rebirth and reconnection
to nature, to myself.
. mutable .
i ran on the endless levee
that rose to the dawn
higher to the sun than anything
god found me there, present
with my eyes closed
smiling, weeping, thinking
i saw beyond the great distance
yet my feet grew roots
stretching me to forever
